We'd like to hear from all of you what improvements we should make to a controller class that is primarily charged with control of enemies, and with debuffing enemies. If you think about it, it would be possible to build a game where all characters do debuff, and damage is a minor side-note effect relegated to one or two classes. But that would reverse the theory of every action movie ever made, as well as almost all games, so players expect damage to be king. This is why there is such an amazing focus on DPS for characters in many games. Many players automatically assume that maximizing DPS creates the strongest, most over-powered character. But controllers suggest that this idea is not true, and it is certainly not true in SoH. We think controllers are a special hi-skill class, most effective on teams but still able to solo, and that powerful debuff makes controllers incredibly OP in some situations. But we also want there to be some (not all) situations in which control powers, not debuff, turn out to be highly effective fighting tools that defeat enemies in swarms. In fact, we are speculating about making a short clip showing some of the unique features of SoH controllers. Would that be of interest?

I suppose I'd have to say the controller archetype in general speaks to my heart. As weak a role as it is in some games due to boss immunities and things like that, I love debuffing as a primary role for a class.
It is fun feeling, and CoH Illusion powerset was an excellent implementation of the concept.
There's a discussion around hard and soft power - hard (approximately) being the ability to just straight up murder your opponent, while soft power is directly weaker but used right means you win without having to fight at all.
CoH really nailed "soft" power in a game better than many others. It's difficult to do well, but having debuffs really mean something is still strangely rare in MMOs. There's nothing more fun than standing in the middle of a swarm of enemies who just can't seem to lay a finger on you 🙂

As weak a role as it is in some games due to boss immunities and things like that, I love debuffing as a primary role for a class. Even better if it's capable of doing some damage at the same time. My favorite archetype in CoH was controller, and my favorite power set was illusion/kinetics. Sure, it was probably a bit OP for soloing, considering the invincible uncontrollable low-damage pets that could be modded to have a shorter cooldown than duration and generated massive threat along with the fact that the archetype ability giving bonus damage to enemies under the effects of your control abilities meant you could melt single targets before the illusionary half of the damage from Spectral Wounds went away PLUS invisibility. Multiplayer, though, was a different ballgame, because you could function as the off-everything. Required paying attention to a lot of things at once, which was always fun. The pets take some pressure of the tank, you've got a couple of heals from kinetics you don't need to use on your pets so you can help your defender when things get rough, you do enough damage to give most blasters a run for their money, and all the while you're laying debuffs down to further help the party and buffs including cooldown reduction. It was fun to roleplay, too. All my costume slots looked like different dudes and part of my shtick was that they were all illusionary disguises and I never showed my true appearance.

Hi, Personally I prefer classes with pets, the very first time I played this type of class was on City of Heroes with the Mastermind, there was a lot of choice between ninjas, undeads, robots, thugs, soldiers etc...And since then, every time I go to a new game I try to find this kind of class, but it's not as complete as the City of Heroes Mastermind... Â
Currently, you can get two pets on the Controller class of Ship of Heroes. We plan to add a Commander class specifically for pets just before or soon after launch. We also plan to provide sophisticated controls for the pets unlike any other MMORPG. There will be a lot of choices for pets.

The results of the poll so far are really interesting. When I first started playing CoH, my first character was a scrapper. Eventually, I played all the archetypes in that game, but scrappers and melee characters always had a special place in my heart. When CoH closed, like many in the community, I started playing SWOTR and my first character was a sorcerer. The sorcerer class is range damage and healing. That combination also speaks to my soul. The third class that speaks to me is the debuffing controller class. In CoH, that was a high skill class because the controllers did so little damage. In SoH, all those will be available, and more.

From Marvel Heroes, Scarlet Witch's Chaos Warp(i think that it was called) or as I like to call it "the moving bubble of death and destruction." It was a great animation. I hope you can pull some inspiration from that games power effects. I also liked Ghost Riders power, Ride, which left a trail of flame everywhere and caused damage. I also like orbital lasers like Champions Online. As far as some pet powers, it would be neat to see floating drones around your character that heal or attack or combine to cause larger effects.
You might also look at a game that never made it out of development. Waaayy back, about 9-10 years ago, Phospor Studios was attempting to replace the lost City of Heroes with a game called Project Awakened. Check out this unfinished Unreal Engine 3 footage. It could have been awesome. 😥
Super Strength and Invulnerability are just classic staples. I've loved them in CoH and CO, less so in DCUO (since they didn't really exist).
I wish a game would really capture the feel of super speed in combat. It's more than just a travel power! So far, no MMORPG has been able to get it down as anything other than running fast.

Illusion & Mind control - This is the powerset Harlequynne is built around. Tricksters are my favourite archetype (one of the many reasons for my name).
Lifesteal/drain-tank melee builds - This the core of Ebon Angel. She heals through damage, and gets stronger the longer she fights, draining the enemy to buff herself.
These are my two "platonic ideals" - things I'd like to be good at, and enjoy or admire in others.
