I always played myself, but with superpowers. It's probably a good thing I don't have them in real life...that being said I never understood why you would constrain yourself to playing someone elses creation.Β Β
Love that signature Pard. When we doing a Doughnut King run again? ππ 10β
The Doughnut King is back! Watch your snacks!

OMG! I remember the times when a wave of new clones spamed the servers of CoH and CO. There were dozens of Wolverines, Iron Men and Batmen. Until the next movie came out then there were dozens of supermen, Spidermen and so on.
I also can understand players who donΒ΄t have a good concept for thier own characters. They are forced to copy a character from a movie. They could be more creative and copy a lesser known character or try to create a character from a novel. Cloning a marvel or dc character will always lead to the fact that you are one of many other uncreative characters on the server.
For RPers who think of a concept, a costume, a background story and putting much love into a self made character, cloning is something similar to blasphemy.

I prefer playing my own character. Leveling up a character given to me is not the same experience as creating a character myself. I feel more connected to the character. It also brings out my creative side. Playing alongside predefined characters in a scripted story would be fine. I would enjoy playing alongside the SoH title heroes.
1) Make the plan
2) Execute the plan
3) Expect the plan to go off the rails
4) Throw away the plan

Absolutely prefer playing my own characters, but then I'm a control freak π I want to be able to make the choices I want, the costume I want, etc. I honestly don't understand the appeal of playing an existing character, personally. I play games for the escapism, I don't like the idea of being tied to any pre-existing canon, personality or powerset.Β Β
Likely those who play games like SoH share JestersGhost's opinion. Is there room for a different enjoyable experience playing a scripted story as a predefined character? Perhaps analogous to being placed as an actor in an already produced movie?

In SWTOR and Batman, you can play as well known characters. In Ship of Heroes, you create an individual character who charts a unique path through game choices and play.
What do you think the respective appeals of these two drastically different approaches are? Do you enjoy both or just one?
