“Ship of Heroes” Completes Successful Beta Testing of their Character Creator
A full week of testing shows the character creator is intuitive and fun to use. Backer participation was enormous at over 85%.
State College, November 11, 2019 – Heroic Games has completed a very successful donor beta of the Ship of Heroes Character Creator Tool (CCT). The Beta test took place from November 1st to November 8th, 2019. “We wanted to show that Ship of Heroes would be fun from the minute you start creating a character. Based on the comments and reviews we received, it looks like we have succeeded”, said Casey McGeever, CEO of Heroic Games.
“We’re amazed that over 85% of the possible participants jumped into the Beta last week, made a character, and explored Apotheosis City. Participation rates for non-combat system Betas are usually much lower than this – we had to expand the participant list by 50% to accommodate demand!” McGeever said. The Beta had an entry bar of $50 in total donations over the last couple of years.
As they often do, the Ship of Heroes team gave every CCT Beta participant an FPS meter in the upper left hand corner of their screen to monitor framerate as they explored the game environment. Very few studios have the courage to let participants see their actual framerate during a Beta, as results can be discouraging if the player has an older computer or a poor internet connection. Ship of Heroes framerates were very good, surpassing many AAA MMORPGs already in production.
“Ship of Heroes had a successful CCT Alpha in September of 2017, and this character creation Beta built on what we’ve learned from our community since then,” Casey McGeever, CEO of Heroic Games, said. “We were able to demonstrate that everything works in our character creator. If it did not work on the first day, it was working by the end of the Beta, which is sort of the point,” said McGeever. “We came away with a long list of desired additions, costume ideas, and tweaks to the system that we can implement over the next 12 months,” he added. The SoH devs believe in getting frequent community feedback, so that as they develop their game, they are adjusting on the fly, preventing the need for a raft of major changes at launch. “We do a lot of polling and discussion with our community, so even if we can’t include a feature one or two people requested, they know that they were heard by the dev team.”
Heroic Games has also released some information that surprised them about the Beta. Since the event was focused on character creation, they were quite surprised that players typically spent 4 – 8 hours creating characters and exploring the starting gameplay environment, a futuristic city aboard a generation ship in space. On average most players spent as much time exploring as they did in character creation. The devs also enabled a number of in-world attractions including a costume contest, a scavenger hunt, a powers testing center, infusions and augment vendors, a couple of nicely polished dungeon maps (hospital and nightclub), an auction house, and a surprise option of swimming in Lake Fortitude. Travel powers and ask-me-anything Q&A with the dev team rounded out the Beta.
The next beta test will be a combat beta to pick up on the combat alpha which took place in March 2018.
Currently, Ship of Heroes developers believe they can soft-launch a streamlined version of the game by December, 2020. A growing body of gameplay can now be viewed on the game’s YouTube channel.
